This April, we visited Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Elementary School in Scarborough, where the children wrote songs and presented a quilt in memory of local GECO Bomb Girls. Each square represents a different part of a war worker’s life, from Victory Gardens to uniforms, from prayers for peace to munitions boxes, from knitting socks to keep troops warm to first aid. This quilt, we hope, is the first in a great series of children’s quilts which will hang in our museum.
They sang,
“O women of kindness and charity,
You have done a lot for humanity.
Your work at GECO has not gone in vain,
For you have gone down to our memory lane.”
