A lovely twelve-year-old Canadian girl who lives in Surrey, British Colombia chose to feature Canada’s Bomb Girls for her Grade 6 heritage fair project. She focussed on the munitions factory located in Scarborough, Ontario. Her project included not only the traditional Bristol board displays, but a mock-up of an ammunition workshop, a munitions tray replete with “fuses,” and she wore a handmade factory uniform with the Scarborough factory’s emblem—a diamond—displayed prominently over her heart.
This stalwart student’s project entitled, “Bomb Girls: If you can walk, creep or crawl, SIGN HERE!” not only won 1st prize in her Grade 6 heritage fair, but she also went on to win at the city level, at the regional level, at the provincial level, and finally at the national level where she won Canada’s History 2022 Young Citizens Award.
The Bomb Girls Legacy Foundation seeks to champion and empower young women of tomorrow in Canada. Mannat’s vision and conscientiousness, her tenacity and dedication, are evident, not only through her project, but in her life. When asked what a program celebrating and encouraging young girls could be called, she declared them, “Diamond Girls,” without hesitation in recognition of the diamond that every bomb girl who worked at the Scarborough plant wore on their uniform.
We are honoured to name Mannat as Canada’s first Diamond Girl.Diamonds are formed under extreme pressure at around 50,000 times that of atmospheric pressure deep in the earth's mantle with temperatures of at least 1050 Celsius. They are one of the world's hardest substances. They represent quality, value, rarity, clarity, brilliance.
Our vision is simple: To support and nurture Canadian young women and men of tomorrow, through volunteerism, entrepreneurism, leadership, social vision, and peacemaking by means of school- based curriculum and social-action activities at all levels of education. Diamond Girls exist in service to their country, the environment and the world.
Our program encourages gender and cultural awareness, leadership, communication, advocacy, financial literacy, confronting fears, taking risks, building confidence and embracing personal agency.
In 2025, as part of September’s start to a new school year, we are launching a Diamond Girls Pilot Project within Scarborough, Ontario’s school community. We have chosen one school where students will work towards a November 11th presentation, and a project commemorating D-Day, or May 8th, Liberation Day in Europe. These dates provide an opportunity for students to learn about the important role Canadians played on the home front during the Second World War. We encourage high school students, who need their 40 hours of volunteer work, to sign up for a Bomb Girls Legacy Foundation event.
Our future initiatives include establishing extra-curriculars such as an after-school Diamond Girls Club where children under the guidance of faculty, work towards a goal to help their community, Canada, and the world.
At the high school level, we are endeavouring to update Grade 10 history curriculum to include a segment on women war workers on the home front.
At the post secondary level, we are endeavouring to set up Diamond Girl scholarships and other monetary and keepsake awards. As a Foundation, we already are working with the University of Toronto, and a sorority whose mandate is to serve their community. We welcome other sororities to get involved.
Teachers: If you would like to start your own Diamond Girl Club in your school, please contact us. We are happy to share ideas, sample activities, and resources. We encourage you to create activities and challenges that help students work towards the tenets of what it means to be a Canadian Diamond Girl. Perhaps your Diamond Girls will want to make a memorial quilt, or raise funds for victims of war, or fill “ditty” bags to help the marginalized or unhoused, Fill-a-Purse, or perhaps they’d like to write letters to veterans and seniors or make friendship bracelets to raise money to help children in other countries.
